I Gusti Lanang Gede Atmaja “Ngurah” was born on 30th June 1977 in the village of Selat, Karangasem, Bali, Indonesia. This area of Bali is particularly famous for salak (snake fruit) farming.

As a child Ngurah spent time with local artisans and this is where his initial interest in painting and the arts began. Ngurah left village life in 1993 to attend High School in Denpasar following which he was accepted by University Maha Saraswati, Denpasar where he studied tourism and economics. Ngurah also attended PAB College, Denpasar and obtained a diploma in tourism. During this time he maintained an avid interest in painting. However, it was not until 1998 that Ngurah decided to start painting on a more serious level. Ngurah first publicly exhibited his work at the prestigious Galeri Esok Lusa in September 2000 and from this exhibition he received many accolades and is today firmly recognised as one of Bali’s leading young artists.
Ngurah’s modern work and exciting use of vivid contrasting colours continues to be exhibited at Galeri Esok Lusa today as well as Galeri Kembung and Kemarin Hari Ini and Di Atas Meja in Seminyak, Bali.

On October 15th 2003 Ngurah held his first solo exhibition away from Galeri Esok Lusa at the new up market and trendy restaurant “Axiom” in Seminyak, Bali. The exhibition was an outstanding success and the restaurant continues to hang Ngurah’s work to date. For the grand opening of the “ Westin Hotel” Nusa Dua on the 30th of April Ngurah was one of only seven noted artists working in Bali asked to exhibit their work for a pre dinner cocktail party “ Art in Modern Luxury “, the exhibition continued for 5 days and Ngurah sold 11 paintings to both local and international collectors. On April 12th 2005 Ngurah held his second solo exhibition at “Fuel” in Legian.
Ngurah is the first Indonesian artist to display his works in the new La Luna Gallery in Chiang Mai Thailand. This is a gallery featuring famous and up and coming Asian artists from Thailand, Burma, and Vietnam. His work is now permanently on display there.

In Australia Ngurah's work is on permanent display at the renowed "Sandy Bottoms Gallery" in Hastings St, in Noosa Queensland. Owner and operator Charles Vidins singled out Ngurah as one of the most up and coming Balinese artists and has commisioned many works by him both for himself and select clients.
